Our homeschool journey began in the fall of 2017 when our oldest child was just entering grade 2, and our second child was starting kindergarten. Up until that time, we had always been strong advocates of the public school system as the very best form of education available.
Our vision of what we wanted for our children began to change during the time our oldest child was in grade 1. From the first school-day in September, he began to struggle behaviorally. Weekday mornings were spent fighting to get him out of bed and off to school. Evenings were spent just trying to survive his fierce anger and frustration as he vented all the feelings he had carefully bottled up and kept hidden inside during the day. It was the absolute picture of misery!
Our attempts to alert his teacher of his emotional status were met with complete bewilderment and a hint of disbelief. “Him?! No, He never has any issues in school! He’s such a good kid!” Apparently he was exceptionally good at hiding his feelings in public.
Eventually summer break arrived, and as the weeks went by we slowly began to see healing taking place. Less anger, less self-destructive comments, and more smiles were coming from our precious child. Then September arrived. After just two days in school his temper was back in full force. On the weekend he had multiple complete meltdowns that had him lying on the floor kicking and screaming (at the age of 7).
We knew that something had to change, and that the change should happen sooner rather than later. We knew nothing about homeschool. We did not know what the government expected, and we had no idea what kind of curriculum we wanted to use. We didn’t even know that there was more than one kind of curriculum available! In complete desperation we contacted another family who had just decided to homeschool a few months before and purchased the same curriculum they had chosen. Then we pulled our son out of grade 2, and the adventure began!
WHY WE WANT TO HELP PEOPLE
Our introduction to the homeschool world was a rough one. While our son was working through the hastily purchased curriculum we acquired for his grade 2 year, we were trying to research what was available, and what we intended to use moving forward. I sensed that there were things I didn’t like about the curriculum we had, but I found it incredibly difficult to find quality, comprehensive information on what else was available. What I did find was a review of this resource here, and an advocate of that curriculum there. Little bits of scattered information spread across dozens of blogs, marketing websites, and YouTube videos.
In the spring of 2018 we attended our first homeschool conference, and were absolutely blown away the sheer volume of material presented in the market hall. We were also overwhelmed by the abundance of information shared through workshops, and conversations with seasoned homeschoolers. Slowly we began to understand that we were having trouble finding information online simply because we were so new that we lacked a real understanding of what homeschooling actually means, and what we need to be successful homeschoolers. Slowly, an idea began to form in my mind. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a conference experience available online? A down to earth place where people who are brand new to homeschooling could get a better understanding of the homeschooling world? What an awesome resource that would have been for us as we started out!
